25 years since the Chernobyl disaster. Ukraine renew calls for more money for the reactor's shelter

25 years since the disaster in Chernobyl, the threat of a radioactive contamination has not vanished. The huge concrete shelter, 29,000 tones and 110 meters high that covered the damaged nuclear reactor and the 200 tone of radioactive fuel, has started to crack and is currently in danger of collapsing. Hence, the Ukrainian government used the 25th anniversary to renew calls for the international community to raise money up to EUR 1.5 billion for building a new shelter.

The Ukrainian authorities, along with other contributors have already spent EUR 750 million for building-up the new shelter, although supplementary funds are needed.

"Not a single nation, even the most powerful, can overcome the consequences of a catastrophe of such a scale by itself. [...] We have paid for the peace of the planet with the lives and health of thousands of compatriots", Ukrainian President Viktor YANUKOVYCH said in the statement on his website last Tuesday.

The catastrophe that took place on April the 26th 1986 is recognized as being one of the worst nuclear disasters in history, spewing a radiation quantity 100 times bigger than the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs. Consequently, a huge cloud of radioactive particles crossed the European continent, affecting most of its residents. 50 people died while trying to put out the flaming reactor, but the number of deceased as an indirect consequence was classed between 4,000 and 200,000 people. According to the International Agency for Cancer Study, until 2065 approximately 16,000 people will die in Europe from various cancer forms caused by the radiations from Chernobyl. At a global level the estimation is of 27,000 deaths.

The recent Fukushima event, in Japan, served as reminder of the dangers caused by nuclear power plants. Altogether, until now, no event related deaths were recorded, but 85.000 people have been evacuated on a 20 kilometers range from the plant.
