Cars registered in Bulgaria caused 1,800 accidents in 6 months

In the first six months of 2011, the number of claims files approved as a result of road accidents caused on the Romanian territory by vehicles registered in Bulgaria has increased by 31% compared to the same period last year, reaching 1,798 files, said Mona CUCU, Director of Mandatory Insurance Department of the ISC. Meanwhile, in 2010, over 10,000 claims on Green Card have been accounted for, of which 3,155 were produced by cars from Bulgaria.

"In only four years, the number of accidents occurred in Romania with cars registered in Bulgaria has increased 15 times: from 204 in 2006, to 3,155 in 2010", said Mona CUCU.

In 2005 there were registered about 150 claims cases on Green Card in Bulgaria, on the first place that year being the accidents caused by cars from Italy, with 1,000 cases.

Moreover, according to Mariana IONITA, Secretary General, B.A.A.R., only in 2010, the number of cases solved by the Office in Romania almost doubled, from 1,649 to 3,081.

The data were presented at the Conference "Motor Insurance in South-Eastern Europe: Solutions for cross-border problems", organized on September 27th in Sofia, in partnership by Media XPRIMM and INSMARKET.bg.

"The phenomenon got bigger since August 2010 and there are difficulties with confirming the validity of policies. We have to emphasize that there are many cases where Bulgarian insurers do not respond at all, and this "sends" the claims to the Romanian institutions, respectively B.A.A.R. and FPVS", said Ionel DIMA, Vice President of AVUS Group, and, at the same time, the moderator of the second part of the Conference.

"The fact that more and more residents in Romania - be they individuals or legal persons - choose to register vehicles in Bulgaria, in my opinion is not illegal, but should at least give some thought to the Romanian authorities. I say this because by this method there are lost first registration taxes, environmental taxes, road taxes etc. in favor of Bulgaria, although these vehicles are used mainly in Romania", said Sorin GRECEANU, General Manager of FPVS.
