The top of insurance companies at the end of the first half of 2011 does
not bring changes at the level of the first three insurance companies.
With an underwritings volume of EUR 133.6 million, the first position
goes to the company ASTRA - a nominal decrease in EUR by 4.6% compared
to 1H/2010. The second position is held by ALLIANZ-TIRIAC (underwritings
of EUR 109.4 million), while the third company on the profile market in
Romania is OMNIASIG which, with a volume of gross written premiums of

The insurance market in Romania ended the first half of this year with
underwritings of RON 4.02 billion, the 7.43% decrease compared with the
same period in 2010 being determined by the evolution of motor
insurance, which has registered a decline of 19.1%, to RON 2.13 billion.
This decrease in income did not affect companies' ability to pay claims
and insurance indemnisations, the total volume of payments being RON
2.47 billion, representing, as in the same period of last year, more
than 60% of gross written premiums, according to the Insurance

The company OMNIASIG VIENNA Insurance Group ended the first half of this
year with a volume of underwritings amounting to RON 433.13 million,
according to IFRS Standards, down by 10.54%. The results are consistent
with the evolution of the entire insurance market in Romania, which is
experiencing significant declines, especially on the motor insurance
segment, a segment that also holds the largest share in the OMNIASIG

of this year with a 30.2% increase in business, up to a total of RON
368.6 million (EUR 88.2 million). Gross written premiums on non-life

In the first six months of the year, member companies of VIENNA
Insurance Group in Romania have underwritten premiums worth EUR 275.8
million, only 0.6% over the level reported in the same period of 2010,
when businesses totaled EUR 274 million. Profit before tax was EUR 1.6
million, as VIG managed in the second quarter to recover the EUR 5
million loss reported for the first three months, but compared to
1H/2010, profit fell by nearly nine times (from EUR 14.3 million).
According to statements of Gunter GEYER, CEO of VIG, the fusion between
OMNIASIG and BCR Asigurari will strengthen the underwritings and the

ALLIANZ-TIRIAC reported for the first six months of this year a pre-tax
profit of RON 5.5 million, calculated in accordance with International
Accounting Standards (IFRS). The insurer ended the first half with total
underwritings of RON 460.3 million, 15% less than in 1H/2010, when
gross written premium income had been RON 543 million. On the non-life
segment, the company's business stood at RON 410 million, 17% below the
level from January-June 2010, following the evolution of motor lines, in
the context of the leasing sector decline and of a policy of prudential
underwriting on MTPL. However, non-motor insurance classes continued
their upward trend, registering, cumulated, a growth of about 5 percent,

Over the last five years, foreign investors have made large capital
infusions to strengthen the financial capacity of insurance companies
held in Romania. Thus, in late 2010, the value of the underwritten
foreign capital was 8.8 times higher than in early 2006. Thus, the share
of foreign capital increased by 42.5 percentage points in the same
period, from 49% in 2006 to 91.4% at the end of 2010, up from 88.65% at
